Experiment 2: Returning

Returning to what already works

There’s a particular kind of rest that comes from making something you already understand.

Not something new, or impressive or a make that needs to prove something. Just something familiar.

Welcome to Experiment 2: Returning.

In this experiment, we’re coming back to what fits, what works and what feels good to make. We’re revisiting the patterns, garments and skills that already hold some history for us. The ones our hands remember. The ones we might even be able to sew without looking at the instructions.

The TNT

If you’ve spent any time in the sewing world, you’ve probably heard the term TNT. Tried and True. The go-to pattern. The reliable one. The one you’ve made more than once.

Sometimes repetition gets framed as boring, uncreative or playing it safe.

But what I have learned through my years of making and teaching is that repetition is where confidence lives.

When you return to something familiar, it is often a relief. Your hands soften. There’s less noise in your head about whether you’re doing it “right” and in that space, interesting things can blossom. You start to notice things you didn’t see the first time.

Making, Again is an ongoing series of gentle creative experiments for paid subscribers. Every six weeks, you’ll be invited into a new experiment. Each one is designed to help you notice, reflect and make in small, achievable ways, without the pressure to produce something “finished” or impressive.

You can think of these experiments as touchpoints rather than tasks. A chance to pause, pay attention, and reconnect with your making practice as it is right now. We’ll take it together, one experiment at a time.

Prompt 2: What is the value in returning?

Returning isn’t about going backwards. It’s about depth.

It’s about asking:

  • What is still here?

  • What still fits?

  • What still feels like me?

What you’ll find in the Playbook for this Experiment

We’ve put together PDF Playbook to guide you through this process. Inside, you’ll find:

  • Gentle prompts to help you get your bearings. For example, you might flip through your old patterns and rediscover something you forgot you loved. You might notice a garment in your wardrobe that has quietly become a repeat offender. You might realise a favourite no longer fits your body or your life, and that returning could look like remaking it differently.

  • Reflection questions to help you understand what might be worth returning to

  • Making Experiments: six low-pressure creative prompts that help you choose a meaningful (and manageable) next step

These Making Experiments are not about productivity. They’re small explorations that sit between noticing and making. You only need to pick one, whichever lights you up from where you are right now.
